Trump's Palm Beach Airport Renaming Hits a $2.75 Million Funding Problem

Palm Beach County officials say they will not use local funds to fully complete the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trump, arguing that Florida should cover the entire cost of a change the state mandated.

The airport officially became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9 under a state law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. But while the Legislature approved $2.75 million for the rebranding, county officials estimate the total cost at about $5.5 million, leaving a roughly $2.75 million shortfall.

That funding gap has sparked a dispute over who should pay to replace terminal signs, update airport systems and complete the broader rebranding.

"I will not personally be voting to utilize any operational funds towards this rebranding," Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores told The Guardian. "This should be solely on the state to be able to fund this. This is their initiative. This is their imposition... so they should be responsible."

County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo has also said the state's appropriation is enough to complete only the most essential changes.

"We will be able to make the baseline, necessary changes to signage with the $2,750,000," Abruzzo said, adding that the county would need the remaining funding from the state to finish the project.

For now, motorists approaching the airport will see new highway signs bearing Trump's name, and the airport has updated its website and digital branding. But much of the terminal still displays the former Palm Beach International Airport name, and officials say a complete conversion cannot move forward without additional funding.

The dispute stems from a law approved by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature earlier this year requiring the airport to be renamed in honor of Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago estate is located a few miles away. Because Palm Beach County owns and operates the airport, it is responsible for implementing the change even though local officials did not initiate it.

The issue has divided county leaders. Commissioners approved the licensing agreement allowing the airport to use Trump's name by a narrow 4-3 vote, while critics argued the state should not impose an expensive renaming on a locally owned airport without fully paying for it.

The renaming also faces legal challenges, with lawsuits questioning the state's authority and raising concerns over the use of public funds for the project.

Unless Florida appropriates additional money, Palm Beach County appears prepared to stop after completing only the minimum changes required to comply with state law, leaving the full transformation to President Donald J. Trump International Airport unfinished.
